What Julie DeLucca-Collins can say in an interview on
Incorporating Mindfulness Into Our Everyday Lives:

Mindfulness is a way to be open and aware of what is happening in the moment—being present both internally and externally. Mindfulness has been shown to improve relationship satisfaction, reduce stress in relationships, and increase empathy. Mindful practices can also help reduce internal stress and anxiety.

Here are 5 simple mindfulness tips that we can all incorporate into our everyday lives:

  1. Be present. Incorporating mindfulness into your daily habits is as easy and does not require a lot of time. Many people think mindfulness and meditation is about spending a lot of time meditating and sitting crossed legged on the floor. However mindfulness can be practiced doing simple everyday tasks like eating, walking, listening or any daily activity. When eating, notice what the food tastes like, the texture, the smell, the color. Being present during everyday tasks, can help us appreciate them and feel more connected.
  2. Practice mindful breathing. One meditative practice is sitting still and feeling a sense of your breath in your body. This practice strengthens one’s concentration because the intent is to continue to pay attention to the breath. If you find yourself running from activity to activity. The most basic way to do mindful breathing is simply to focus your attention on your breath, the inhale and exhale. You can do this while standing, but ideally, you’ll be sitting or even lying in a comfortable position.
  3. Focus on your environment. You can create a mindfulness practice by curating your environment. Use things that appeal to all five senses, candles, soft music, lighting, warm blankets to help you awaken your senses and stay present. The holidays are filled with sights and sounds. Paying attention to the simple things can create a sense of gratitude and help you feel present and peaceful. We spend a lot of time decoration, cooking, and shopping for gifts to make our family and friends happy. Take time to enjoy the beauty of your surroundings.
  4. Get enough sleep. Lack of sleep leaves individuals feeling overly tired. It can also lead to mental overwhelm, making it more difficult to detach jumbled thoughts and concentrate on what you need to do. Give yourself permission to rest, recharge and not be perfect. During the holiday season we spend a lot of time doing and this can heighten our stress. Rest and recharge. Doing so will give you more focus and energy.
  5. Take brain breaks. Letting yourself unfocus by briefly zoning out activates the default mode network in your brain, giving it a chance to take a rest. If you don’t manage the stimulus around you this can become overwhelming. Do some of the things you enjoy, like reading, go for a walk or sit in silence. This will help you refocus and connect to the moment.
