What Are the Most Common Stressors?

Interview Carol Barkes

According to the American Psychological Association Annual Stress in America report, the most common sources of stress are really not a surprise considering the state of our world at the moment. They are as follows: The Future of our Nation (63%) Money (62%), Work (61%), Current Political Climate (57%), Violence and Crime (51%). It is interesting to note that in 2015, money was the highest stressor to Americans but that has now been topped by worries about the future of our nation—something that is increasingly apparent in the news.

Negotiation Tips to Succeed With Anyone

Here are some practical communication strategies from our expert, Carol Barkes, MBA, CPM, on negotiation:

Remember the Acronym A.I.A:

A = Awareness: pay attention to how you are intuitively feeling. Notice if you are starting to get stressed. If you are, take some time to deep breathe (yawning is even better), stretch, tap or walk. This is all about getting oxygen to your brain and stopping the continual release of stress hormones.
I = Intentions: Remember what your intentions are for this mediation. If you want it to be collaborative, don’t take the bait if the other party throws out some competitive or judgmental statements.
A = Actions: What actions do you need to take to keep the negotiation on track?

Five Ways To Eliminate Pre-Wedding Conflict

Interview Carol Barkes

The following are some talking points that Carol Barkes can discuss and expand on on the topic of eliminating pre-wedding conflict:

  1. Tell the people you care about that you are struggling and try to help them understand what you are struggling about and why.
  2. Seek the help of “content experts” who can help you make the best decisions with the least amount of time and effort.
  3. Remember the bigger picture.  This is supposed to be one of the most amazing moments of your life.  If you get stuck in the trenches of planning, you will miss the lovely little wonders along the way.
  4. Minimize negative people from your day-to-day life.  These people can cause toxic stress and reduce your ability to effectively manage the challenges of planning.
  5. Take time to be quiet and still so your brain can help you resolve issues that arise.  When we get quiet, our brains have the opportunity to reboot and combine information for brilliant solutions we wouldn’t have had if we power through without pausing.

Carol Barkes’ area of expertise is in neuroscience-based conflict resolution, communication, and negotiation.  She has been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX, in the Wall Street Journal and is the best selling author of Success Breakthroughs with Jack Canfield (Chicken Soup for the Soul Author).  She also just spoke at the UN this past June.

Here are a few things to take note of why being nice is the new disruptive business strategy:

1)  When customers cannot connect all the dots, their brains go to the negative and perceive a potential threat.  That means a blank face where emotions cannot be determined makes customers uneasy. Instead, have a soft smile that activates the muscles around the eyes and this will generate trust in the customer’s brain.
