What Paul Tracey can say in an interview on
Multifactor Authentification:

We all know that we are encouraged to use multifactor authentication, which we recommend as well but how good is it really? Can it be compromised? The answer can come as a shock when we look at the security of cell phones.

      • Recently we have seen an increase in cross-application data theft on cell phones. Although this is not a new concept it has increased its capabilities.
      • Xeneomorph which is a banking trojan attack delivered through apps in the google play store was recently released and has over 500,000 downloads. This particular malware is currently being developed further but already offers attackers much more sophisticated attacks. Including: stealing text messages and 2-factor codes, and additionally installing a self-protection system so you cannot fully uninstall it.
      • These applications are designed to deceive google security like their predecessor’s fitness training dropper and fast cleaner and they continue to be successful.
      • What can we do? Only download apps that you absolutely need on your phone that are google verified and from a credible vendor and make sure you have antivirus and antimalware software installed on your phone.  The painful one—do a little bit of google research on an app and read the app permissions it’s requesting BEFORE you click accept and download. You can also make a secure folder on your phone for banking apps which will add an extra layer of security.
