Holiday Relationship tips:
Hints to help the holidays during and after divorce and how to best get along with your family:
- Plan ahead. We advise our clients to have the holiday plans locked in and committed as soon as possible. Waiting until the last minute or going into the holidays without everyone knowing where they’ll be, who they will be with, and how they will celebrate really helps!
- Keep the traditions. Instead of alternating year on / year off, we encourage families to make the holiday the same every year — at least while the kids are young — don’t make them choose or feel only one parent gets the holiday.
- Get away from “things” and closer to memories. Some parents try to outspend each other on gifts. Time is the most precious gift. Bake the cookies. Watch the movie. Find the perfect place to drink hot chocolate and talk about all the precious gifts in your life together.
- Remember it’s not about you. Too often parents are heartbroken that their children are only there for a bit, or don’t want to do what the parents have planned. Remember how structured their lives are all year long. This is their holiday season too. Asking and caring about what the family wants may actually make your life much easier and stress-free.
