What Dr. Rodriguez can say in an interview about
the Reasons Why We Delay Medical Care:

Many of us are procrastinators. Somehow, we feel that if we ignore that email from our tax accountant or put the electric bill in the ‘special pile’ everything will turn out okay. But we all know the inevitable of postponing these things leads to bad outcomes. This goes for our health as well. If we keep putting off that physical exam or delay that screening colonoscopy the outcome may cost us our lives. We know that undiagnosed diabetes, hypertension, or premalignant colon polyps can lead to conditions such as heart disease, strokes, kidney failure, and colon cancer to name a few.

The reasons for delaying our healthcare are numerous but the most common 3 are:

1) “I am too busy.”

This is the most common complaint we see as to why patients avoid seeking care. It is understandable that many of us are busy in our daily lives. Trying to balance work life, family life, and vacations can be very stressful, and trying to squeeze in a doctor visit is not something we generally look forward to. Making a greater effort to make that appointment and get those tests done will make a huge difference.

2) “My husband hates doctors.”

Somehow this ‘hate’ makes you a healthier person, but probably not. Come on guys, just impress your spouse and get it done. Having peace of mind about your health will be worth it. Once you break down that wall with your provider, you will see that the experience is worthwhile. The reality is that there is a chance you are preventing something that will cause way more stress in your life.

3) “I can’t afford it.”

Most of your screening/preventative exams are covered 100% by most insurances. If not, many providers offer discounts/payment plans for most visits. Don’t use expenses as an excuse. We are willing to buy the latest and greatest flat screens/phones but not for peace of mind regarding your health. Putting your health first is the best first step one can take in getting the care she or he needs.
