Psychological Tricks to Save You Money

Interview Carol Barkes

What Carol Barkes could say in an interview on this topic:

    • One key way to save money/spend less is to start being observant of your brains reaction to spending.

    • When you think about money as a whole, one should consider what they want money for. Most want financial security, empowerment, etc.

    • Once a person identifies the purpose for their money, they can do the same thing with purchases. If financial security is the goal, each time a person makes a purchase, they should stop to consider if this purchase is moving them further away from or closer to their goal. Take, for instance, going out for dinner. Is it about the food or is about time with friends? If it is about time with friends and financial security is the goal, one can then consider inviting friends over for meals at their house. They will accomplish the same short-term goal but also help their long-term goal, as well.

  • The trick is to observe, notice, and work with our brains tendencies to make unconscious decisions for us.
