What Dr. Rodriguez can say in an interview about
Delaying Medical Care:

Many of us are procrastinators. Somehow, if we ignore that email from our tax accountant or put the electric bill in the ‘special pile,’ everything will turn out fine. Unfortunately, we all know the inevitable conclusion of procrastination leads to unfortunate outcomes—this goes for our health as well. If we keep putting off that physical exam or delaying that colonoscopy screening, the outcome may cost our lives.

With a new year here, taking charge of one’s health can be re-prioritized so you can start 2023 off right! The beginning of a year is a perfect time to re-examine your priorities and ensure your medical care is one of them.

One example of a consequence of delaying medical care is that undiagnosed diabetes, hypertension, or premalignant colon polyps can lead to conditions such as heart disease, strokes, kidney failure, and colon cancer, to name a few. Primary care physicians speak with patients about these delays constantly.

The reasons for delaying our healthcare are numerous, but the most common three are:

    1. “I’m too busy.”– This is the most common complaint most physicians see as to why patients avoid going to the doctor. Understandably, many of us are busy in our daily lives- trying to balance work, family life, and vacations can be very stressful, and squeezing in a doctor’s visit is not something to look forward to. But if you can, you should make an effort to make that appointment and get those tests done.
    2. “I hate doctors.”– Some people might think this ‘hate’ makes you a healthier person, but it certainly does not. Having peace of mind about your health will be worth it. Once you break down that wall with your provider, you’ll see they’re not such a scary person after all. The reality is that there is a decent chance you’re preventing something that will cause way more stress in your life.
    3. “I can’t afford it.”– Most of your screening/preventative exams are covered 100 percent by most insurances. If not, many providers offer discounts/payment plans for most visits. Don’t use expenses as an excuse. The cost of an iPhone in 2022 ranges from $429 to $1,599- most people are willing to buy the latest and most fabulous flat screens/phones, but they’re not ready to put money towards their peace of mind regarding their health. It would be best if you invested in the care you need.

The bottom line is this: Delaying your medical care can lead to severe consequences. Take charge of your health by contacting your PCP to schedule a general check-up. Start your new year right!
