What Dr. Rodriguez can say in an interview about
Allergies and Recent Cost-Saving Options:

For years, allergy sufferers have struggled with trying to overcome their symptoms. Daily salt water nasal rinses, and taking sedating OTC antihistamines are common options. Thankfully, there are much better treatment options such as nasal steroids, non-sedating OTC antihistamines, etc. Unfortunately, there are many whose allergy symptoms (including asthma) are not well controlled with the current OTC options. Because of this, there are some great options for helping manage your allergies:

  1. Allergy Shots. These were approved and can be given through your local Allergy specialist clinic, which has helped many but can be very pricey (especially if you don’t have health insurance). In the last several years there have been great strides made to better help allergy sufferers at a lower cost. Allergy ‘pills,’ also known as SLIT (Sublingual Immunotherapy), which dissolve under the tongue, are now FDA-approved. These tablets are prescribed by allergy specialists and are a cheaper and safer alternative to shots. These pills are specific to the region of the US you live in, so your Texas pills will not work in Michigan. This is because each pill has the pollen-specific to your area that you may be allergic to. Again, this option is completely safe and very effective at reducing allergy symptoms. The downside is, you have to take them every day for two to three years, depending on the region you live in.
  2. Allergy Drops. Though not FDA-approved, they have been found to be safe and may reduce your symptoms. The same concept applies to these drops just as the pills; you place drops under your tongue, which slowly desensitizes you to your local allergens, which in turn reduces your allergy symptoms. These drops are a great option for those who suffer from mild to moderate allergy symptoms, as well as asthma. If you suffer from asthma you should consult with your physician to see if this OCT option is right for you. These drops come under different names, and you may want to look at reviews for the specific brand you buy, but there is a good chance you can improve your allergy control with them.

What’s important in all this is that we have great, low-cost options now for treating allergy symptoms. No one should suffer from uncontrolled allergies, or the sedating effects of the older medications used to treat them.
