What Dr. Rodriguez can say in an interview about
Walking and Health:

We’ve heard the age-old tale that walking after eating helps digestion, but researchers have found that it can reduce glucose levels by up to 17%.*

When you eat, your blood sugar levels spike. This is a completely normal event called a postprandial spike. This triggers the release of insulin, which enables the glucose to enter your cells which is then used for energy.** Now, doctors say you could drastically reduce these glucose levels by walking for a few minutes after eating. They’ve even gone as far as to say that merely standing can help as well, citing it could reduce levels on average by 9.51%.*

As mentioned before, the many health benefits of walking after a meal are not new to us, but this new find means that we have more ways to control those glucose levels and lessen the risk of type 2 diabetes, which in turn lessens the risk of many other health issues.

Other Activities to
help lower glucose levels

Other than just walking or standing, here are some other activities you could do to try and lower glucose levels***:

      •       Eat more fiber
      •       Manage your stress
      •       Drink plenty of water
      •       Eat balanced meals at regular times throughout the day
      •       Eat foods rich in chromium and magnesium

It’s important to note that physical exercise also helps mental health. When we’re depressed, anxious, or stressed, it can be just as much of a physical strain as it can be mental. Mental and physical health are so closely related they can take cues from each other—by exercising and bettering your physical health, you’re also improving your mental health!

Diabetes causes illnesses such as heart attacks, heart failure, stroke, and kidney failure; by focusing on light walking a few minutes after each meal, you’re lowering glucose levels, lowering your risk of diabetes, and in turn, helping prevent those illnesses.*** Knowing what causes illnesses like these while understanding how to try and stop them before they ever become a reality is an important part of staying informed and managing your health.
