What Dr. Mimi Secor could say in an interview on
The Benefits of Vitamin D:

Particularly now, we are hearing about a lot of different ways to stay healthy and protect ourselves from illness. A rising star in the pandemic is Vitamin D. Recent studies have pointed to this vitamin as a link to not only preventing COVID-19, but also lessening the severity of the illness.

Fact About Vitamin D

    • Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that acts like a hormone in the body. It can be obtained from very few food sources (oily fish, fish skin, egg yolks), a supplement of D3 (cholecalciferol) taken orally, and skin synthesis via sun exposure/UVB radiation.

    • Because there are few food sources, sun exposure is variable and linked to skin cancer, in many countries including the U.S., milk, plant-derived milk substitutes, and cereals are fortified with vitamin D.
    • Skin synthesis is limited in dark-skinned individuals and in all individuals during winter months at northern latitudes (above Atlanta, Georgia) from November through May.

What Vitamin D does

    • Vitamin D increases the absorption of calcium, magnesium, and phosphate, which are all essential for bone health. Another effect in humans includes enhanced immune system function which may reduce the risk of infections particularly respiratory infections such as influenza and possibly COVID-19.
    • Additional benefits such as the reduced risk of cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, multiple sclerosis, thyroid problems, reduced depression, increased fertility, enhanced weight loss, psoriasis, and rickets in children, have also been hypothesized but to date robust research is lacking.
    • Recently, Vitamin D has been linked to protecting people from contracting COVID-19.

types of circumstances That Make it necessary to supplement

      • This depends on many factors including your age, race, residential latitude, season, sun exposure, and many other factors.
      • Approximately 40% of Americans are deficient in vitamin D. Deficiency is particularly common in the elderly population. An estimated 82% of black people and 70% of the Hispanic population are also deficient.
      • Considering these statistics, most people probably should be taking a Vitamin D supplement.

As always, one should follow the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for vitamin D and to speak to your doctor first before taking this or any supplements to ensure that it is safe to do so.
